Sujeet Desai

 
 

26-year-old Sujeet Desai is an accomplished musician and speaker born with Down syndrome. Sujeet plays six instruments: Bb and Bass clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Violin, Piano and Drums. In June 2001 he graduated from high school with Honors, and in May 2003 he graduated from the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in Massachusetts. Sujeet travels around the world to play his inspirational solo performances and teach self-advocacy workshops. In July 2006, Sujeet  married. He currently lives with his wife in an apartment in Rome, NY, and enjoys his independent living.

Sujeet is a recipient of 8 International awards for his music and self-advocacy. One of these awards came from the President of Singapore at the 8th World Down Syndrome Congress. The award honored Sujeet as the most recognized self advocate born with Down syndrome in the world.

 

Along with his accomplishments as a musician, Sujeet has a 2nd degree Black Belt in martial arts (Tae Kwon Do). He has won Gold & Silver medals in the World Games' 99 Special Olympics in Swimming and numerous medals in Special Olympics in Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Running and Bowling.

 

Two documentaries about Sujeet’s life have been made, and he has given many TV & newspaper interviews. Sujeet has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and on national television shows “The View”. “20/20”, “Oprah Winfrey” and WCNY public channels.
